Events for October

1952: Mad Magazine #1 debuts from the usual gang of idiots.

1959: The Silver Age Green Lantern debuts in DC Comics' Showcase #22, by John Broome and Gil Kane.

1970: Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith bring Robert E. Howard's pulp hero Conan to comics with Marvel's Conan the Barbarian #1.

1974: Wolverine makes his first appearance in Marvel's Incredible Hulk #180 (although this is only a dramatic last-page entrance -- most comic book aficionados put his first appearance in Hulk #181, published the following month).

1980: Marv Wolfman, George Perez, and Len Wein introduce the New Teen Titans in DC Comics Presents #26. They would get their own title the next month.

1986: To commemorate its 25th anniversary, Marvel Comics launches the "New Universe," consisting of 8 new titles unconnected with the then-current Marvel Comics continuity. The experiment would fold within three years.
