1910: Clarence Charles "C.C." Beck, artist for the earliest Captain Marvel/SHAZAM! comics, is born in Minneapolis, MN.
1938: Superman debuts in Action Comics #1 and launches an industry.
1940: Will Eisner debuts the Spirit in newspapers across the country.
1972: Power Man (Luke Cage) debuts in Hero for Hire #1 by Archie Goodwin and George Tuska (with help from Roy Thomas and John Romita Sr). He is the first black character to headline his own comic book.
1973: A battle between Spider-Man and the Green Goblin leads to the death of Gwen Stacy in Amazing Spider-Man #121.
1983: Lobo makes his fraggin' debut in Omega Men #3.
1984: Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird launch a franchise and a small black-and-white comics boom with their self-published Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1.
1986: John Byrne relaunches DC Comics' flagship character after the Crisis on Infinite Earths with The Man of Steel #1.
1991: Colleen Doran self-publishes her first issue of A Distant Soil.
1992: Todd McFarlane's Spawn #1 hits the stands, courtesy of Image Comics.
1993: Erik Larsen's Savage Dragon #1 is published by Image Comics. At this time, it is the only comic still written and published by an original Image Comics founder.
