1939: Bob Kane and Bill Finger debut the Batman in Detective Comics #27.
1962: Bruce Banner is exposed to a gamma-bomb detonation, unleashing Marvel's Incredible Hulk in Incredible Hulk #1.
1975: Len Wein and Dave Cockrum produce Giant Size X-Men #1 for Marvel Comics, reviving the flagging comic book series and creating one of the biggest comic-book franchises ever.
1976: American Splendor #1, Harvey Pekar's seminal autobiographical underground comic, is published. The comic books would eventually be used as the basis for an award winning film of the same name in 2003.
1979: Frank Miller becomes the new artist on Daredevil #158. He would take over scripting in #165. This comic is generally considered the start of the "grim-and-gritty" era that would reach its creative peak with Alan Moore's Watchmen and Miller's own The Dark Knight Returns.
2001: Marvel Comics abandons the Comics Code Authority and institutes its own peculiar and unexplained ratings system.
