May 1, 1937: Torchy Brown in Dixie to Harlem debuts in the Pittsburgh Courier. Created by Zelda Jackson "Jackie" Ormes, it is the first syndicated cartoon by a black woman.

May 1, 1940: Alex Nino, artist for DC's Black Orchid and the Sunday Tarzan comic strips, is born in the Phillippines.

May 1, 1956: Phil Foglio, writer/artist for What's New with Phil and Dixie, Buck Godot, and Girl Genius, is born.

: Artist Tim Sale is born in Ithica, NY.
